How to level up your mechanics skill in project zomboid

In this article, we’ll be discussing how to hotwire a car in the game, what tools you’ll need to work on cars, and how to level up the mechanics skill.

How to hotwire a car in the game

In order to hotwire a car in the game, you’ll need to have a level 2 mechanic and level 1 electrical. If you didn’t start as a class with the innate ability to hotwire, you can press V while in the driver’s seat to bring up an options menu to hotwire.

Pressing Z in the number keys is a fast way to switch which seat you are in. You cannot sit and see to have items in them. You can click on the icons on the dash to turn the lights on and off as well as lock or unlock the doors and trunk.

The different tools needed to work on cars

If you’re planning to repair the body, such as the trunk or hood, you will also need metal working tools.

How to level up the mechanics skill

So how do we go about leveling the mechanics skill? Well, first you can’t really do much until you read the appropriate mechanics magazine, as many of the options count as a recipe you need to learn. The magazines take like 20 minutes to read in game, so read them when you find them. Let’s have that done before you decide you want to fix up a car and have to go searching for one.

What’s the ideal way to crank out those experience points? Read the appropriate mechanics skill box experience boost will save you tons of time. Then go around stripping every car you can.

When you successfully do something, such as removing the battery, you need to wait 24 hours before you can gain experience from doing it again. At least that is the conclusion my experimentation led me to believe.

This does mean if you mess up your timing and redo it at 23 hours, you have to wait a full 24 additional hours to gain experience from doing it. Be aware to avoid wasting your time since it’s not quite something you do once a day. You can retry things you fail over and over and get a small amount of experience each time.

Definitely the best way to grind mechanics until your level gets too high and you stop failing often.

Note that there is a chance to damage the parts. Do not do this on a pristine car or any parts you actually care about, or you could end up completely destroying them before you realize what you’ve done.

How to tow a car

You can tow cars by pressing V between the bumpers. Pressing V makes the UI go away too, so make sure you’re facing your car when you do it. It’ll seem like nothing happened.

Make your own junkyard and practice on the cars daily.

Some repairs require metal working. The UI is really good about telling you what you need, so you can easily plan ahead if you decide to fix up a car.

How to add mods to the game

It’s been a while since I released a guide, so I didn’t spend much time looking for exploits like I normally would have with the updates coming out so soon. I’m not sure if it’s a good idea anyways.

There’s a couple lore friendly vehicle mods and I really recommend those because the current selection of vehicles isn’t great.

If you didn’t know, you can easily add mods through the steam workshop for the game.
